Olympics is an international event held after every four years. Sports persons from many countries of the world participate in various sports events at this grand even. Sports events need to be organized at all levels, national as well as international, to encourage all sports and sports persons.
The sports persons look forward to such international events and eagerly participate in them. Such events provide them an opportunity to excel and show their sports skills, win medals and acclaim, set new records and win fabulous prizes.
Sports events encourage sportsmanship and excellence. Right from childhood and schools sports are encouraged and given importance. Children and youngsters are expected to play sports. The truly talented and devoted go much ahead to become famous sportsmen in some particular sports and make it their career.
The very talented get an opportunity to participate in Olympics, thus making a name for themselves and if he or she wins medals, then a name for his or her country. Back home the winners are further honoured by their government with awards and cash prizes to reward their efforts to represent their countries successfully.
Each time these games are hosted in a different country. That country makes all necessary preparations to facilitate the event. The host country makes provision for infrastructure such stadiums, guest houses, hotels, transportation, communication, entertainment and so on to house sports persons from all the countries as well as the spectators that are likely to come from other countries. The host country spends a huge amount in making such arrangements if it doesn’t have all the arrangements required.
The host country gets much recognition and an opportunity to showcase it culture and tradition to the world. People from all over the world come to witness this event and they get to know about its people, culture and civilization. The opening and the closing ceremony are grand events that add to the beauty of the event.
Sports events at such a scale boosts global culture, tolerance and friendship. This grand event brings many countries together on one platform.
On the other hand it is also true to say that lots of resources and funds are wasted in hosting this grand event. These funds could have been utilized for some other purpose such as health, education, food or on the poor and the underprivileged of that country.
Olympics lasts only for sixteen days. Once the sporting event is over the huge stadiums and the guest houses lie vacant and gradually fall into ruins. Hence it seems a colossal waste of resources and money.
I would like to say in the end that Olympics can be hosted in countries where such infrastructures exist so that the burden of hosting this event does not fall on any one country. But Olympics should continue to be hosted to bring all participating countries together on one platform.
