Safety of workers

Some work places do not assure the safety of workers who use dangerous equipment. What can be done?

Nowadays, safety at work is very important and has received a lot of attention worldwide. However, there are still some workplaces where dangerous equipment is used but the safety of the workers is not assured. In order to enhance the safety of the workers, we need to establish a work safety environment free from all risks.

Workers can face many hazards related to their occupation. They can face chemical hazards in which dangerous chemicals are used which could lead to cancer or even skin diseases. Health care professionals are at a greater risk to exposure to blood borne diseases like hepatitis and HIV. Their life can also be at a risk due to an outbreak of fire. They can also be exposed to radiation, vibration and noise hazards.

A safety protocol needs to be in place with a list of all necessary measures. This will include doing a risk assessment to carefully examine and predict all the risks and consequences a worker might encounter during equipment handling.

All the workers who are expected to work with dangerous equipment need to be educated on the equipment handling and operating techniques. Supervisors should be employed to supervise the work done by the workers during their working hours and alert them if any suspicious thing happens.

Everybody should be liable for ensuring safety at any workplace, including supervisors, business owners, managers and workers themselves. The workers are the ones who actually do the work and use hazardous equipment. Hence, they should know better than anyone else on the risks they have and be cautious of them. Hence, educating them is a very necessary step.

In addition, the government and authority should also be answerable to ensure the safety of all workplaces and all workers under their care. The companies should be fined by the government or should be asked to close down if they compromise with the safety of the workers.

Everyone who is involved in the work and the authority should take part in making workplaces safe for workers. In addition, business entities should have a safety protocol with a constant risk assessment, worker training programs and supervision so that people can enjoy a better workplace.
