Public and private transportation

Public transportation includes buses, subways, trains, and taxis. Private transportation usually refers to private cars, bicycles, or motorcycles. Compare these two kinds of transportation and discuss the advantages of each. Decide which is better, giving details to support your discussion.

Public transportation facilities are provided by the government to its people. People need to travel to places of work or study. The government collects taxes for this from the people. Not all can afford to have their personal cars or motorcycles.

Public transportation is cheaper. So many people prefer to travel by it. Public transportation facilities are good for the poor and less well off. They are cheap and convenient for school and college goers. In trains and busses people can read or chat on phones. They can nap too.

One can relax and sit comfortably and do not have the hassle of driving oneself. For long distance travel it is safer to travel by bus or a train. A bus or a train can travel faster. In some countries there are super fast trains. Driving for long hours can be strenuous and tiring.

If more and more people use public transportation it will reduce consumption of petrol. We need to preserve it for it is an exhaustible source of energy. It is a valuable and a very useful natural resource.

Travelling by bus or subways will reduce the traffic on the roads. This will indirectly reduce air pollution.

Many prefer to avoid using public transportation. They save a lot of time that would normally spend while waiting at a bus stop or a station. They do not have to walk it to the bus stop.

On the other hand many people have their own vehicles like cycles, scooters or cars. They prefer the comfort of their own vehicle. Many prefer to avoid using public transportation. They save a lot of time that would normally spend while waiting at a bus stop or a station. They do not have to walk it to the bus stop.

Schedules get upset if buses or trains are delayed. Frequent buses can prolong a journey. Busses and trains are overcrowded at the peak hours and may not get a seat to sit.

In case of an emergency private transportation is preferable. For family outings a car is a better option. A car or any other personal vehicles is also a status symbol. Two-wheelers are cheaper and more convenient for middle class families.

Too many vehicles on the road can cause traffic problems. It leads to air pollution.

A major problem faced by owners of private vehicles is parking space. Proper parking places are not allotted everywhere. So the people have to take the risk of parking at wrong places and getting their vehicle towed away. They then have to pay a penalty to get their vehicles back.

Finally I will like to conclude that private vehicles are always comfortable and can save much time. If one can afford to have them then why not. But on the other hand if people use public transportation it is equally beneficial to the people as well as the society. There is no harm in using public transportation at times.
