Overweight children

The number of overweight children in developed countries is increasing. Some people think this is due to problems such as the growing number of fast food outlets. Others believe that parents are to blame for not looking after their children’s health. To what extent do you agree with these views.

All around the world the living standards are becoming higher and all more similar to western society.  Increasing number of overweight children in developing nations is a major problem which is often open for a debate. Some people think that the problem is due to an increase in fast food centers while some think that it is parents who are lacking care of their children’s health.

It is undeniable that the significant growth of fast food outlets has truly affected the case of overweight problem in children. Fast foods originally were places to eat a meal in few times, but now have become the easiest and cheapest solution to have lunch all around the world.

Nowadays we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty food such as chips and fried chicken, at low prices. This has created a whole generation of adults who have never cooked a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then children would not be tempted to buy food from there.

In most public places such as in theme parks or shopping malls, fast food outlets definitely exist and they offer various kinds of things that could attract the children very easily. The other factors that attract the children are its low cost, its instant availability and feasibility as the distance of fast food outlets has decreased due to its increase in number.

Busy parents cannot take care of their children and cannot maintain a balance diet for them. It is commonly seen in working class parents as they are busy working. They prefer to give meal allowance to their children which is more practical and efficient and that is why children eat more and more fast food outside and become obese.

Parents have to find time to prepare healthy food for children, for example, fresh vegetables or meat. Moreover, they have to free their children’s diet from sweets, exchanging them with fresh fruits. Along with a balanced diet, they should also focus on exercise which could keep their children fit.

Although the increasing population of fast food restaurants have given some contribution to the problem of overweight children, I do believe that the lack of attention of parents also play a significant role as well.
