1 IELTS Speaking 1 – 17

Personal Questions are asked in the first part of the Speaking interview. The candidates is often nervous before the speaking test. To help them relax the examiners ask a few personal questions that are very simple in nature.

1 What is your name?

My name is Suraj.

2 What is the meaning of your name?

It means the sun. / In Hindi we call the sun Suraj.

3 Who kept your name?

My maternal aunt kept my name. She liked the name a lot.

4 Why are you giving IELTS?

I wish to go abroad for further study. / I wish to apply for permanent residence/ work permit in Canada.

5 What course do you intend to pursue in Australia?

I wish to study engineering.

6 What will you do if you fail the IELTS?

I shall improve my English more and try to clear IELTS. / I shall join classes to improve my English.

7 How does it feel to go abroad for the first time?
I am very excited to go to New Zealand. I have heard a lot about this country. My aunt lives there.

I am very nervous. But I shall manage. I will be very glad if I get admission in a good college or university. It will be a wonderful opportunity to study and live abroad.

8 How do you think you will cope abroad? 

Yes, there are a lot of Indians already in Canada. I have several friends as well. The universities also provide a lot of assistance to international students and help them to settle down well.

Initially I might live in the college campus and work there as well, so I don’t think I will have any problems.

9 What do you do? / Are you a student? / Where do you work?

I have just passed out of school. / I just completed my twelfth.

I am studying engineering. I am in the seventh semester. I now wish to pursue masters in states.

I am a physiotherapist. I am doing internship in VS hospital.

10 What subjects are you studying?

I am studying Mathematics. / I am studying medicine.

11 Why did you choose commerce?

I chose commerce as I wanted to do business. / I want to do MBA in finance.

12 Which subject you didn’t like in school?

I dislike Sanskrit. I found it tough to learn as we do no use it in our daily life. It was hard to mug up.

13 Which was your favourite subject in school?

My favourite subject was mathematics. I scored good marks. I used to practice daily. I found it really easy. You need to mug up like other subjects. My father used to teach me mathematics.

14 Tell about yourself?

I am a housewife. I have got two children. I like to take care of them. My husband works in a trading company and often travels to other towns for work. I now wish to migrate to Australia and settle there. My sister lives there and she wants me to go there.

I am a nurse. I work in Apollo. I have shift timings. I am married and have a kid. Hence it is quite tough managing both my home and my job. I am quite tired by the end of the day but I like taking care of the patients.

15 What is the climate in your hometown?

In Ahmedabad the weather is quite pleasant throughout the year. It gets very hot in summers, especially during the day but at night it cools down and becomes pleasant. We have good rain during the raining season. Winters are pleasant as temperatures don’t drop so low. We don’t need woolens.

16 How are the people?

The people of Ahmedabad / Vadodara (etc.) are very friendly and pleasant. They are very simple in nature. They like to mix with others. Many people do business. People are very fond of eating out and shopping in malls.

17 If you had the choice, where would you choose to live in India?

I would like to live in Mumbai. Currently I live in Ahmedabad. There are good job opportunities in Mumbai. I am a business analyst. There are many finance companies in Mumbai.
